Wallace State Sweeps Home Doubleheader Against Calhoun
HANCEVILLE, Ala. — Wallace State completed a conference doubleheader sweep of Calhoun on Thursday at home, winning Game 1 by a 6-3 score before taking Game 2, 11-3. The Lions improved to 26-19 overall and 16-11 in conference play.
Wallace State used early offense in both games to take control of the day. The Lions scored three runs in the first inning of Game 1 and added six runs in the second inning of Game 2.
In the opener, Wallace State jumped in front 3-0 in the first inning. Carter Cumming delivered an RBI single and Cooper Clemmons followed with a two-run home run to right field.
Calhoun cut the lead to 3-1 in the second inning, but Wallace State added three more runs in the fifth to push the advantage to 6-1. Clint Seymore had an RBI double in the inning, while Aiden Boileau and Cumming each drove in a run.
Calhoun scored twice in the sixth inning, but Matthew Lyons closed the door in relief. Lyons pitched the final 1.2 innings without allowing a run and struck out two.
Baylen Tuten earned the win after allowing three runs, one earned, on nine hits over 5.1 innings. The left-hander struck out five and walked two while throwing 86 pitches.
Wallace State finished with nine hits in Game 1. Jackson Rickett and Seymore each had two hits, while Clemmons drove in two runs with his home run. Rickett scored twice and added a pair of doubles. Seymore also doubled twice, while Boileau, Sam Hennegar and Brooks Heatherly each added doubles.
The Lions also turned three double plays in the opener.
Wallace State carried the momentum into Game 2 and scored in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Boileau before breaking the game open with six runs in the second inning.
Rickett highlighted the second inning with a two-run single. Cumming added an RBI single, Clemmons drew a bases-loaded walk, Carson Burdette singled home a run and another run scored on an error as Wallace State built a 7-0 lead.
The Lions added two more runs in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Clemmons and an RBI single by Hennegar.
Calhoun got two runs back in the fourth on a two-run home run by Wilson, but Wallace State answered with two more runs in the sixth when Boileau homered to left field.
Druw Smith went the distance in Game 2 to earn the win. Smith allowed four hits and three runs over seven innings, striking out five and walking six.
Wallace State collected 13 hits in the second game. Rickett went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, two RBIs and two doubles. Cumming also had three hits and drove in a run.
Boileau finished 1-for-2 with three RBIs, including a two-run home run, and scored three times. Hennegar had two hits and two RBIs, while Seymore added two hits. Burdette drove in a run and Israel Navarro added a hit and a stolen base.
Wallace State played error-free defense in Game 2 and turned one double play.
The Lions return to action Saturday when they travel to Calhoun for a conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
