Big Innings Hurt Wallace State in 15-10 Loss at East Central
DECATUR, Miss. — Wallace State battled offensively but could not overcome a pair of big innings in a 15-10 road loss to East Central Community College on Saturday.
The Lions showed resilience throughout, collecting 11 hits and putting together multiple scoring bursts, including a two-run third inning and a five-run fourth that briefly gave Wallace State momentum. However, East Central answered with early runs and a decisive six-run inning in the seventh to regain control and pull away late.
Cooper McNutt led the offensive effort with a strong performance, going 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs. Israel Navarro and Dyris Martinez each added two hits, while Clint Seymore also recorded a pair of hits and drove in a run.
Carter Cumming contributed a double among his hits, and Cooper Clemmons added a hit and scored twice as the Lions found production throughout the lineup. Connor Elmore chipped in with an RBI, and Carson Burdette also crossed the plate in the effort.
On the mound, Wallace State used multiple arms in an attempt to slow East Central's offense. Baylen Tuten started and allowed eight runs over 1.1 innings. Landon Blackwood provided a strong response out of the bullpen, tossing 4.2 innings while allowing just one run and striking out six to keep the Lions within reach.
Eli Cannon took the loss after surrendering five runs in relief, while CJ Gross added 1.2 innings of work late.
Despite the loss, Wallace State showed offensive firepower and the ability to respond throughout the game, but East Central's timely hitting and big innings ultimately proved to be the difference.
