Bio
With a storied career spanning more than four decades, Coach Randy Putman stands as one of the most accomplished and respected figures in Alabama baseball history. As he completed his 35th season with Wallace State Community College in 2025, Putman not only cemented his legacy as the winningest coach in Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) history-with a record of 1,264 wins and 617 losses-but also as a transformative leader in the lives of hundreds of student-athletes.
Coach Putman's achievements are unparalleled in Alabama's collegiate baseball ranks. He has led Wallace State to seven ACCC championships, six Southeastern Regional titles, and six NJCAA Division I World Series appearances. His teams have consistently demonstrated excellence, discipline, and character-hallmarks of Putman's leadership.
Honored nationally and statewide, Putman was inducted into the NJCAA Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2006, the Alabama Coaches Hall of Fame in 2009, the Alabama Junior College Hall of Fame in 1991, and the Cullman County Sports Hall of Fame in 2013. A seven-time ACCC Coach of the Year and recipient of the NJCAA Coaches Legacy Award, he was also recognized by the Alabama Baseball Coaches Association in 2022 for achieving 1,000 career wins.
Coach Putman's impact extends far beyond statistics and championships. He has mentored 36 players who have advanced to professional baseball, including MLB stars Craig Kimbrel, Derek Holland, Jake Elmore, Zelous Wheeler, and Graham Godfrey. His influence continues to shape young athletes, such as current standout pitcher Luke Fernandez, a leading contender for NJCAA DI Pitcher of the Year.
His player and personal development system-deeply supported by families, alumni, and fans-is a testament to the culture of excellence and mentorship he has fostered. He is equally proud of the outstanding roster of coaches, community servants, and fathers who are former players.
This year, Putman also oversaw a major $1 million renovation to Wallace State's baseball facility, enhancing resources for current players and elevating the overall experience for athletes and spectators alike.
Before his tenure at Wallace State, Putman compiled a remarkable 152-28 record at Tate High School in Florida, capturing two state championships and coaching future major leaguers Jay Bell and Travis Fryman. A Birmingham native and former All-Conference player at Jacksonville State, Putman also spent three years in professional baseball with the Kansas City Royals and San Diego Padres organizations.
Coach Randy Putman's extraordinary coaching record, unwavering commitment to student athlete development, and enduring impact on Alabama baseball make him a most deserving candidate for induction into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame.
