Lions Split Home Doubleheader with Southern Union, Stand at 24-19
HANCEVILLE, Ala. — Wallace State split a home conference doubleheader with Southern Union on Saturday, dropping the opener 7-6 before winning the nightcap 6-5. The Lions move to 24-19 overall and 13-11 in ACCC play.
GAME 1: Southern Union 7, Wallace State 6
Wallace State scored three runs in the second inning — on a Cooper Clemmons single, a Southern Union error, and an Abel Montes sacrifice fly — and added three more in the third on a Montes fielder's choice and two Southern Union errors to take a 6-0 lead. Southern Union scored seven runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by a three-run home run by Redd, to take a 7-6 lead they held through the final out.
Wallace State finished with 10 hits. Montes led the Lions with two RBI. Carter Cumming, Dyris Martinez, Cooper Clemmons, and Sam Hennegar each collected two hits. The Lions committed no errors.
Sam Vincent started and worked five and one-third innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs while striking out three and walking one. Druw Smith allowed three runs in one-third of an inning. Rhys Klein took the loss, recording no outs while allowing one run. Matthew Lyons closed with one and one-third innings of scoreless relief.
GAME 2: Wallace State 6, Southern Union 5
Wallace State scored two runs in the first inning when Aiden Boileau homered to left field and Clint Seymore singled to score one run. The Lions added one run in the fifth, two in the sixth on a Dyris Martinez fielder's choice and a passed ball, and one in the seventh. Southern Union scored four runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to tie the game at five before a Wallace State run in the seventh provided the winning margin.
Boileau went 2-for-4 with a home run and one RBI. Clemmons and Seymore each went 2-for-3. Cumming hit a triple and drove in one run. Jackson Rickett also tripled and drove in one run. Martinez, Montes, Cumming, and Seymore each drove in one run.
Jacob James earned the win, working seven innings and allowing seven hits and five runs — three earned — while striking out five and walking one. Matthew Lyons collected the save with two innings of one-hit, scoreless relief.
