Cheyenne Lucas is a sophomore middle blocker from Eva, Alabama, and a 2025 graduate of Brewer High School. Lucas began playing volleyball in the eighth grade and quickly developed a competitive passion for the sport.

One of her favorite high school athletic memories came during her freshman season in a close match that featured a long rally. Lucas delivered the final hit that sent Brewer to the state tournament.

She chose Wallace State because of the volleyball program’s history of success and the competitive mindset surrounding the team.

“The program’s record speaks for itself, and the teams have grit, determination and heart,” Lucas said. “They want to win.”

Lucas credits her family with having the greatest impact on her athletic journey. Their support has helped her grow as both a player and a person.

Her proudest moment as a Wallace State athlete has been having the opportunity to help the team and contribute in any way she can.

College athletics has taught Lucas the importance of trusting her coaches. She has learned that following their guidance and believing in the process can help both the individual player and the team improve.

Lucas balances volleyball and academics by creating a schedule and remaining committed to it. She understands that consistency and discipline are necessary to stay on top of her responsibilities.

Her personal goal for the season is to become a consistent blocking presence at the net. As a team, she wants the Lions to compete with heart, maintain a strong desire to win and pursue a conference championship.

“I want to block consistently,” Lucas said. “For the team, I want us to have heart and strive to win. A conference championship is where I’d like to see us.”

Lucas’ favorite practice activity is playing six-on-six because it provides game-like competition and allows the team to work together in realistic situations.

She does not follow a specific pregame routine or have a go-to hype song. Instead, Lucas mentally prepares by studying what is happening on the other side of the net. She focuses on what the Lions can control, how they can slow down the opponent and the best ways to attack.

“I think about what is on the other side of the net and what we can do as a team to control it and shut them down,” Lucas said. “I also think about what we can do to attack them.”

Lucas believes her teammates would describe her as outgoing, funny and a country girl. She enjoys bringing energy and personality to the team while maintaining a competitive approach.

Had she not chosen volleyball, Lucas said she would likely play softball or soccer.

A fun fact about Lucas is that although she is only 19, she jokes that she sometimes feels as though she is living in an 80-year-old body.

Outside volleyball, she enjoys spending time with her friends and family.

Lucas is still determining exactly what career path she wants to pursue after college. For now, she is focused on being successful in volleyball and in the classroom.

She hopes to be remembered at Wallace State as someone who succeeded athletically and academically while doing everything she could to help the program.

Her advice to younger athletes is to never allow one mistake to define their performance.

“One bad ball doesn’t determine you,” Lucas said. “What you do after it does.”
