Wallace State Men’s Soccer Battles Southern Union to 1-1 Draw

Wallace State Men’s Soccer Battles Southern Union to 1-1 Draw

WADLEY, Ala. – Wallace State men's soccer earned a gritty road point on Tuesday evening, drawing 1-1 with conference rival Southern Union in a match that never opened up but delivered plenty of tense moments.

From the opening whistle, both sides showed a clear focus on defensive organization, creating a cagey atmosphere with limited space in midfield. Chances were scarce until Southern Union broke through midway in the match with a stunning strike from distance, a shot from nearly 25 yards that curled beyond the Wallace State keeper.

The Lions didn't trail for long. On the very next sequence of play, Elijah Wong once again proved decisive in the attacking third, finishing off a clever assist from Harper Jones to draw Wallace State level. Wong's quick response shifted momentum back toward the visitors and set the tone for the remainder of the contest.

Defensively, Wallace State leaned heavily on the commanding presence of goalkeeper Emrik Senécal, who came up with several crucial interventions. His ability to rise above traffic and claim dangerous crosses, especially on Southern Union's set-piece attempts, helped relieve pressure and maintain the stalemate.

Though both teams pressed for a late winner, neither could break down the other's disciplined back line. In the end, the Lions left Wadley with a well-earned point and further evidence of their resilience in tight matches.

With the draw, Wallace State moves to 6-1-3 overall and 4-0-2 in ACCC play, keeping them firmly in the hunt for the top spot in the conference standings.

The Lions return to action on Tuesday, traveling to face Northeast Alabama in another key conference showdown.
