No. 13 Wallace State Sweeps Coastal Alabama-South in Home Doubleheader
HANCEVILLE, Ala. — No. 13 Wallace State swept a home doubleheader against Coastal Alabama-South on Thursday, winning 2-1 in Game 1 and 6-3 in Game 2.
In Game 1, Wallace State earned a 2-1 victory behind a strong outing in the circle from Madeline Howard and a late home run from Brooklynn Sertell. Coastal Alabama-South led 1-0 entering the bottom of the sixth before Sertell delivered a two-run home run to center field to give the Lady Lions the lead.
Howard went the distance, allowing one run on six hits over seven innings. She struck out five and walked four while recording all 21 outs. Sertell finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the offense. Wallace State turned one double play defensively.
In Game 2, Wallace State took control early in a 6-3 win. The Lady Lions scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning on four hits to build a 5-1 lead. The key play in the inning was an inside-the-park home run by Blakelyn Austin on a full count that drove in three runs.
Wallace State added another run in the third inning on a solo home run by Sertell.
Ava Smith earned the win, allowing three runs on eight hits over seven innings. She struck out one and walked two.
Austin drove in three runs from the No. 7 spot in the lineup, finishing 1-for-3. Sertell went 2-for-2 to lead the Lady Lions in hits. Wallace State committed no errors defensively, with Kaelyn Jones recording a team-high five chances in the field.
Wallace State improved to 40-10 overall with the doubleheader sweep.
