Wallace State Splits Road Doubleheader at Calhoun
DECATUR, Ala. — Wallace State split a conference road doubleheader against Calhoun on Thursday, rolling to a 10-2 win in the opener before falling 5-4 on a walk-off single in the nightcap. The Lady Lions moved to 34-9 overall and 17-5 in conference play.
Wallace State broke open the first game with three runs in the second inning, two more in the third and five in the fourth to earn the run-rule victory.
Brooklynn Sertell led the offensive outburst, going 3-for-3 with two home runs, five RBIs and three runs scored. Sertell homered in the second inning to give Wallace State the lead and added a two-run homer in the third.
Charli Kyser also had a big game at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and one run scored. Kyser's solo homer in the second inning helped Wallace State build a 3-0 advantage.
The Lady Lions added five runs on six hits in the fourth inning to put the game away. Kaelyn Jones delivered an RBI double, Sertell added a two-run single, Kyser followed with an RBI single and Leah Graves capped the inning with another run-scoring single.
Wallace State finished with 14 hits in the opener. Kyser and Sertell each had three hits, while Tenayia Thomas and Kenley Vaughn added two hits apiece.
Madeline Howard earned the win in the circle after allowing two runs, neither earned, on six hits over five innings. Howard struck out four and walked two.
The second game remained scoreless through four innings before Calhoun took a 1-0 lead in the fifth on an RBI double.
Kyser tied the game in the sixth with a solo home run to right field, but Calhoun answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to move in front 4-1.
Wallace State rallied in the seventh. Kyser drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Reese Decker followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 4-4. Calhoun answered in the bottom of the seventh with a walk-off RBI single to take the 5-4 win.
Kyser finished 1-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and a sacrifice fly in the second game. Decker went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Jones added two hits. Vaughn doubled and scored a run.
Taylor Stalling started in the circle and allowed three runs on 10 hits over 5.1 innings with three strikeouts. Camdyn Bassett worked one inning in relief, and Ava Smith recorded the final out before Calhoun won it in the seventh.
