Lady Lions Sweep Road Doubleheader at Southern Union, Win Both Games 10-1 and 10-4
WADLEY, Ala. — Wallace State swept a road conference doubleheader at Southern Union on Saturday, winning 10-1 in five innings and 10-4 in seven innings. The Lady Lions improve to 33-8 overall and 16-4 in ACCC play.
GAME 1: Wallace State 10, Southern Union 1
Wallace State scored two runs in the first inning when Reese Decker grounded out and Brooklynn Sertell singled to center field, each scoring one run. The Lions broke the game open with six runs in the second inning — Tenayja Thomas doubled to score one, Sertell singled to score two, Charli Kyser tripled to score two, and Blakelyn Austin singled to score one. Wallace State added one run in the third on a Thomas single and one more in the fifth.
Sertell finished 2-for-3 with three RBI to lead the offense. Kaelyn Jones, Thomas, and Austin each went 3-for-3. Kyser went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI. Wallace State finished with 14 hits, drew four walks, and turned one double play.
Madeline Howard started and worked all five innings, allowing two hits and one unearned run while striking out three and walking two on 85 pitches.
GAME 2: Wallace State 10, Southern Union 4
Wallace State scored five runs in the second inning when Leah Graves doubled to score one, Thomas doubled to score one, Austin singled to score two, and Reese Decker doubled to score one. The Lions added three runs in the fifth on a Kenley Vaughn double and an Ashlyn Burns home run to left field, then two more in the sixth on a Sertell home run to center field.
Vaughn went 3-for-3 with three doubles and one RBI, leading the team with six total bases. Austin went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Burns finished 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Sertell went 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Decker went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Wallace State totaled 14 hits and drew three walks.
Ava Smith started and earned the win, working three and one-third innings and allowing six hits and one earned run while walking one. Camdyn Bassett worked one and two-thirds innings in relief, and Taylor Stalling closed with two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and walking one.
