Lady Lions Sweep Southern Union in Home Doubleheader Thursday
HANCEVILLE, Ala. — Wallace State swept Southern Union in a home conference doubleheader Thursday, winning 10-4 and 5-1. The Lady Lions improve to 31-8 overall and 14-4 in ACCC play.
GAME 1: Wallace State 10, Southern Union 4
Wallace State scored three runs in the second inning when Ashlyn Burns singled to score two runs and a fielder's choice plated one more. The Lions added two runs in the third on a Kenley Vaughn double and a Blakelyn Austin sacrifice fly, then extended the lead to 8-1 in the fifth when Austin homered to left field to score two runs and McKenzie Stribling singled to score one more. Teagan Harmon capped the scoring with a two-run home run to left field in the sixth.
Austin finished 1-for-1 with three RBI and four total bases. Kaelyn Jones and Brooklynn Sertell each collected two hits. Wallace State finished with 13 hits and drew four walks as a team. Austin and Blakelyn Austin each stole a base.
Camdyn Bassett started and worked five and two-thirds innings, allowing seven hits and four runs while striking out four and walking three. Madeline Howard closed out one and one-third innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit and striking out one.
GAME 2: Wallace State 5, Southern Union 1
Sertell homered to left field in the first inning to score two runs and give Wallace State an early lead it would not relinquish. Leah Graves added a solo home run to center field in the sixth to push the margin to four before Southern Union scored its lone run.
Tenayja Thomas led the offense with a 3-for-4 performance. Sertell went 1-for-2 with two RBI. Burns drew two walks to lead the team, and Wallace State accumulated five walks as a team. The Lions turned one double play and committed no errors.
Taylor Stalling started and worked five innings, allowing five hits and one run while walking one and recording no strikeouts. Howard followed with two innings of scoreless relief, surrendering one hit and striking out one.
