Lady Lions grind out two wins at Choccolocco Park
OXFORD, Ala. — Winning looks different depending on the day. For Wallace State on Wednesday, it looked like grit, timely swings, and pitching that never blinked.
The Lady Lions battled their way to a pair of wins at Choccolocco Park, edging North Iowa Area Community College 3 to 2 before turning around and securing a 5 to 2 victory over Georgia Military College.
It was not the run-rule fireworks from earlier in the week. This time, Wallace State showed it can win when every pitch matters.
Game 1: Wallace State 3, NIACC 2
This one came down to execution in the tightest moments.
Wallace State scratched across three runs on six hits, doing just enough to outlast NIACC in a back-and-forth game that stayed within a single swing throughout.
Kaelyn Jones set the tone at the top of the lineup, finishing with two hits and an RBI. Ashlyn Burns delivered a key two-RBI performance, accounting for the bulk of the offense. Brooklynn Sertell added a hit and an RBI, while Reese Decker chipped in with a run-scoring hit of her own.
In the circle, Madeline Howard delivered a composed outing to earn the win. She worked five innings, allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out seven. Ava Smith came on in relief and shut the door, limiting NIACC's late push and preserving the one-run lead.
Wallace State's pitching staff combined to strike out nine and held NIACC to just five hits, refusing to give up the big inning.
Game 2: Wallace State 5, Georgia Military College 2
The second game featured a little more breathing room, but the same formula.
Wallace State collected 12 hits and steadily built its lead, scoring in multiple innings to keep Georgia Military College from gaining any traction.
Kaelyn Jones continued her strong day with three hits, setting the table from the leadoff spot. Brooklynn Sertell delivered one of the biggest swings of the game, finishing with three hits and driving in three runs. Leah Graves added two hits and an RBI, while Tenayja Thomas and Ashlynn Massey each contributed key hits to keep innings alive.
In the circle, Ava Smith went the distance and earned the win, allowing four hits and two runs across seven innings. She stayed in control throughout, working efficiently and limiting damage when Georgia Military College threatened.
