PERFECT ON THE ROAD: No. 10 Wallace State Lady Lions Outlast No. 11 Coastal Alabama South 5-4 in Conference Battle
HANCEVILLE, Ala. – For the second time in the same day at Coastal Alabama South, a Wallace State tennis team found itself trailing after doubles — and for the second time, the Lions rose to the challenge. The No. 10 Wallace State Lady Lions defeated No. 11 Coastal Alabama South 5-4 on Thursday, March 12, in a gutsy road conference victory that pushed their record to 11-0 and showcased the grit and depth running through this program.
Coastal South claimed the doubles point by taking two of three courts. The home side opened with an 8-4 victory on Court 1 as Mabiongo and Kocyte defeated Madison Standifer and Indira Wilson. Court 2 also went to Coastal South as Walter and Stenger edged Martin and Lichlyter, 8-6. Wallace State salvaged a critical doubles point on Court 3, however, as Elizabeth Standifer and Jayden Johnson battled through a tiebreaker to defeat Langendries and T. Johnson, 9-8 (5), keeping the Lady Lions within striking distance heading into singles.
Wallace State's singles corps answered with four straight victories to swing the match. Madison Standifer set the tone at Court 1, cruising past Walter 6-3, 6-4 in straight sets. Jaedyn Martin delivered the grittiest performance of the day at Court 2, rallying from a first-set tiebreak loss to defeat Mabiongo 4-7, 6-4, 6-2 in three sets. Indira Wilson was dominant at Court 3, dispatching Langendries 6-2, 6-3. Elizabeth Standifer then delivered the clinching point at Court 4 with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Stenger, giving Wallace State an insurmountable 5-2 advantage.
Coastal South closed with wins on Courts 5 and 6, but the Lady Lions had already done the damage.
