No. 19 Wallace State Women Roll Past Lawson State, 78–39, on the Road
Birmingham, Ala. — No. 19 Wallace State women's basketball continued its strong run through conference play Thursday night, cruising to a 78–39 road victory over Lawson State to improve to 21–1 overall and 6–1 in conference action.
The Lady Lions set the tone early, jumping out to a 15–7 lead after the first quarter behind balanced scoring. Zamyra Goode and Idaysia Mercer each scored four points in the opening period as Wallace State controlled the tempo on both ends of the floor.
Wallace State extended its advantage in the second quarter, outscoring Lawson State 19–11 to take a 34–18 lead into halftime. Mercer led the way during the quarter with eight points and three rebounds, finishing the half with 12 points as the Lady Lions continued to find success in transition and on the offensive glass.
The Lions put the game firmly out of reach in the third quarter. Behind a strong performance from Kameron Sanders, who scored six points and grabbed five rebounds in the period, Wallace State pushed the lead to 53–27 heading into the final quarter.
Wallace State maintained its defensive intensity down the stretch, holding Lawson State in check while closing out the contest. Sinaya Gibson and Jada Peterson each added six points in the fourth quarter as the Lady Lions finished off the 39-point win.
Rebounding and defense were major factors in the victory. Wallace State dominated the boards 46–18, including a decisive 16–5 edge on the offensive glass, and recorded five blocked shots. The Lady Lions also held Lawson State to just 26 percent shooting from the field while dishing out 14 assists on 29 made baskets.
Mercer led Wallace State with 16 points, five rebounds, three assists and a block. Sanders posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, adding two steals and a block. Gibson finished with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Goode added 10 points, seven rebounds and a steal.
Taylor Smith contributed nine points, five rebounds and three blocks, Bailey Tetro added six points, four rebounds and three assists, and Peterson scored six points. Heather Tetro, Karma Wynn and Nia Smith rounded out the scoring, while Leah Childress added three assists.
With the win, Wallace State continued to assert itself as one of the top teams in the conference as the Lady Lions move deeper into ACCC play.
