Wallace State Women Dominate Southern Union, 79–35, to Remain Unbeaten in Conference Play
HANCEVILLE — Wallace State women's basketball delivered another dominant performance Thursday night, overwhelming Southern Union 79–35 in conference action as the Lions continued their perfect start to the season.
Wallace State wasted little time asserting control, racing out to a 25–3 lead after the first quarter and never allowing the visiting Bison to settle into the game. The Lions carried a commanding 45–11 advantage into halftime and extended the margin to 61–22 heading into the final period before cruising to the 44-point victory.
The Lions were efficient and unselfish on offense, knocking down 17 three-pointers while recording 23 assists on 27 made field goals. Wallace State also dominated the glass, outrebounding Southern Union 62–27, creating numerous second-chance opportunities and limiting the Bison to one shot per possession.
Leah Childress led all scorers with 27 points, shooting 9-of-14 from the field and adding four rebounds and two steals. Taylor Smith posted a strong double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds, along with a block, continuing her consistent play in the paint.
Idaysia Mercer contributed nine points, six rebounds, 10 assists, a steal and a block, directing the offense throughout the night. Sinaya Gibson added six points and seven rebounds, while Kameron Sanders finished with six points, seven rebounds, four assists and a steal.
Nia Smith chipped in five points and nine rebounds, and Jada Peterson added three points, a rebound and an assist. Zamyra Goode filled the stat sheet with eight rebounds and six assists to go with two points, while Bailey Tetro scored two points with two rebounds and two assists. Heather Tetro and Karma Wynn each contributed on the boards as Wallace State's depth continued to shine.
With the win, Wallace State improves to 18–0 overall and 3–0 in conference play, maintaining its position as one of the top teams in NJCAA women's basketball.
