No. 8 Lions Take Down No. 18 Meridian CC 7-2 in Home Match
HANCEVILLE — The No. 8 Wallace State men's tennis team earned an impressive home victory on Friday, knocking off No. 18 Meridian (Miss.) Community College 7-2 to remain unbeaten on the season. The Lions were dominant in singles play and added two key doubles wins to secure the statement victory.
Wallace State controlled the match by winning five of six singles contests. At the top of the lineup, Alexander Grube delivered a commanding performance at No. 1 singles, cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 win. Angel Gautier followed with a strong showing at No. 2, earning a 6-3, 6-0 victory to give the Lions early momentum.
The Lions continued to roll through the middle of the lineup as Francois Van Wyk posted a flawless 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles, while Tom Köpf matched that result with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 5. Nikith Surapaneni closed out singles play for Wallace State with a convincing 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 6 position.
Meridian's lone singles point came at No. 3, where Luke Uzelac battled through a tightly contested three-set match before falling 4-6, 6-3, 7-10 in the deciding super tiebreaker.
In doubles action, Wallace State secured two of three matches to push the final score to 7-2. The No. 2 team of Gautier and Van Wyk earned an 8-1 victory, while Jean Badenhorst and Köpf were dominant at No. 3 doubles with an 8-0 win. Meridian claimed its doubles point at the No. 1 position.
With the win, Wallace State improves to 2-0 on the season, continuing a strong start as the Lions notch a quality victory against a nationally ranked opponent.
