Athletics Roundup: Volleyball Sweeps Bevill State and Lawson State, Men’s Golf Sixth in Dan York Tournament, Men’s and Women’s Tennis Open Home Season Against Itawamba

The Wallace State Volleyball team continued their strong start to the season with a sweep of Bevill State at home on Sept. 11. The Lady Lions posted a 3-0 victory with set scores of 25-5, 25-14 and 25-13, further improving their record and showcasing their depth in front of a home crowd.

Freshman Amanda Monge of Davenport, Fla., led the charge for Wallace State with a standout performance, registering 11 kills on 21 attempts, nine digs and five service aces. Monge's versatility at the net and from the service line was key in securing the team's early momentum.  

Freshman Rachel Mecklenburg of Madison also made her presence felt, contributing six kills on 11 attempts, five assists and five service aces, while adding three digs and two block assists. Mecklenburg's well-rounded play on both offense and defense contributed to the team's success.  

Sophomore Chloe Jackson of Athens continued her consistent offensive production, recording eight kills and adding one assist and one dig. Freshman Kailey Dickerson of Wellington added six kills on 17 attempts and seven digs, while contributing a block assist.  

On the defensive end, sophomore Abby McDonald of Cullman led the team with eight digs and chipped in with a service ace, while freshman Ali Price of Rainsville tallied six digs. Freshman Amelia Fowler of Sardis City also contributed three digs, playing a key role in Wallace State's defensive coverage.  

Wallace State Volleyball Sweeps Lawson State to Secure Another 3-0 Win  

The Lady Lions continued their at-home run with a 3-0 sweep over Lawson State Community College on Sept. 11. The Lions controlled the match with set scores of 25-19, 25-13, and 25-23, further solidifying their impressive start to the season.  

Monge led the offensive effort with a match-high 19 kills on 39 attempts, while also adding two assists and one dig. Monge's relentless attack kept Lawson State on their heels throughout the match, allowing Wallace State to dictate the pace.  

Jackson contributed eight kills on 16 attempts and provided two block assists, anchoring Wallace State's front line. Jackson's efficiency at the net and strong defensive presence were key to the Lions' sweep.  

Mecklenburg was a force on both sides of the ball, recording give kills, 11 digs, two assists, one service ace and a block assist.  Her versatility was on full display as she contributed to multiple facets of the game.   

Dickerson tallied six kills and 11 digs, helping Wallace State maintain its defensive pressure while also contributing offensively. Freshman Ali Price of Rainsville facilitated the Lions' attack with 32 assists and added two kills, while freshman Addison Delaney of Madison added two kills to round out Wallace State's balanced attack.  

Defensively, McDonald led the back row with 11 digs, providing stability and defensive coverage for Wallace State. Freshman Ava Calvarese of Fairview chipped in with two assists.  

The Wallace State Volleyball team will compete at home against Pellissippi State Community College on Sept. 14 at 1 p.m.   

Wallace State Men's Golf Competes at Dan York Memorial Tournament  

The Wallace State Men's Golf team showcased solid performances at the Dan York Memorial Tournament in Pensacola, Fla., finishing sixth overall in a competitive field. Sophomore Cole Lindeman was a standout, shooting an impressive 74 and 70 for an even-par tournament score. His strong play earned him a sixth-place individual finish. The Lions look ahead to competing in the Chuck Kalanick Memorial Invitational hosted by Snead State Community College at Cherokee Ridge Country Club in Union Grove on Sept. 21-24.  

Wallace State Tennis Opens Home Season Against Itawamba  

Wallace State's Tennis teams delivered strong performances in their first home matches against Itawamba Community College on Sept. 11. The men's team swept their way to a commanding 9-0 victory, while the women's team put up a competitive fight in a tight 4-5 contest. Both the men's and women's teams will compete in the Huntingdon Tournament in Montgomery on Sept. 13 and 14. Play is set to begin at 9 a.m.
