Lions Set to Face Calhoun in ACCC Tournament Opener Thursday
The postseason begins Thursday afternoon for the Wallace State Community College men's basketball team as the Lions take on Calhoun Community College at 4 p.m. in the opening round of the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) Tournament.
The matchup marks the third meeting of the season between the two conference rivals, with the teams splitting their regular-season series. Calhoun claimed the first contest earlier in the year with an 88–82 victory, while Wallace State responded in the rematch with a high-scoring 109–101 win, giving the Lions momentum heading into the tournament.
In the most recent meeting, Wallace State showcased its offensive firepower, pushing the pace and finding success both inside and from the perimeter. The Lions eclipsed the 100-point mark while consistently attacking the basket and converting key opportunities down the stretch to secure the win.
Calhoun, however, proved in the first matchup that it can challenge Wallace State when the tempo is controlled. The Warhawks slowed the game and forced difficult possessions, ultimately capitalizing late to earn the six-point victory.
With both teams owning a win against the other, Thursday's tournament game serves as the rubber match and carries significantly higher stakes. The winner will advance to the tournament semifinals Friday to face top-seeded Shelton State Community College, while the loser will see its season come to an end.
For Wallace State, maintaining the offensive rhythm that produced 109 points in the previous matchup could be the key to advancing. Establishing pace early and converting scoring opportunities will likely be a priority for the Lions.
Calhoun will look to counter by controlling the tempo, limiting transition opportunities, and forcing Wallace State to execute in the half court.
With postseason stakes and familiarity between the two teams, Thursday's ACCC Tournament opener promises to be a competitive battle as Wallace State and Calhoun meet for the decisive third time this season.
