Follow Wallace State Cheerleading on Instagram @wallacestatecheerleading

Wallace State Cheerleading is a two-time UCA national champ, winning the 2004 and 2006 titles, and a two-time UCA national runner-up.

Kevin Yates is the new Wallace State cheerleading coach for the 2022-2023 season. Yates, a Wallace State grad and Oneonta native, is well-known in the area, owning Showtime All-Star Tumble and Cheer in Cleveland. Yates cheered for Wallace State from 2000-2002 before transferring to Morehead State University, where he was a part of two national championships at the UCA College Nationals. Yates earned a degree at Wallace State in business administration and a bachelor's from Morehead State in University Studies with an emphasis on Business Communications.

Mission/Philosophy

The purpose of a Wallace State Cheerleader is:

To be a leader in the community, on campus and in the classroom.
To support intercollegiate athletics by leading cheers, entertaining and raising fan support/involvement.
To participate and be competitive in the athletic activity known as cheerleading by performing cheers, dances, partner stunts, pyramids, tumbling, basket tosses, and any other activities defined by the head coach.
To serve as public relations ambassadors of Wallace State Community College—to uphold, reflect and project the goals and ideals of Wallace State, as well as promote Wallace State Community College and its Athletics Department.

Cheerleading Organizational Structure
The Wallace State cheerleading program is now an all-female team. The cheerleading team cheers for all men's and women's home basketball games and selected members cheer conference championship and post-season basketball games. Cheerleaders also represent the college at several events on campus and are ambassadors for Wallace State throughout the community. The Wallace State cheerleading squad is one of the premier community college squads in the nation. The WSCC Cheerleaders won the UCA National Championship in 2004 and 2006.

Eligibility Requirements
Must be enrolled as a full-time student at Wallace State Community College and complete (pass) a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester.

Must maintain at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA while attending Wallace State Community College. Student-athletes who drop below a 2.5 GPA will lose their scholarship.

Must pass a student-athlete physical mandated by NCAA and ACCC standards prior to participating at tryouts, practices and games.

Although the required skills for Wallace State cheerleaders may vary from year to year, there are some requirements that we highly recommend having for tryouts. Tumbling skills are a standing back tuck, standing back handspring back tuck, 2 back handsprings to tuck, layout or full, and a tumbling pass which consists of at least a round off back handspring tuck, layout or full. Stunt skills recommended are a quick toss extension and lib, jump in full up, and at least some knowledge of flipping stunts.

Scholarship Information
Wallace State Cheerleading is a scholarship program. For the 2022-2023 academic year, we will award 19 members of the cheerleading team full in-state tuition (+ books) scholarships. The head coach will determine who receives a scholarship based on the following: seniority on team, academic standing, conduct, athletic ability, and tryout score. Cheerleaders must commit to cheering both semesters, except when graduation occurs between the two semesters. Please note that scholarship funds may not be applied to a student's account until the applicant has completed their financial aid application at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

Camp and Competition
The Wallace State Community College cheerleaders will compete in the Open All-Girl Division at the UCA College National Championships in Orlando, Florida. All members are eligible to compete at the UCA College National Championships, depending on academic standing and eligibility, athletic ability, and proven performance; however, only 20-24 members, including alternates, will be chosen to travel and compete. Practice Schedule
The Wallace State cheerleading team usually practices 3 days a week and attends team workouts 2 days a week during the fall and spring semesters. Additional practices will be added as Nationals approaches. Team members should be prepared to practice through most of their Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks. Spring Break is also not guaranteed if either basketball team makes it to post-season play.

The Wallace State Community College cheerleaders are fortunate to have access to exceptional facilities, including a practice room with mirrored walls and a full competition floor. They also have use of the weight room, training rooms, and video facilities.

Additional appearances will be scheduled throughout the year as requested and must be fulfilled by all team members. Each member is responsible for obtaining at least 10 volunteer hours each year.

Academics
Wallace State Community College provides tutors upon request to student-athletes in need, and cheerleaders have access to their own Academic Advisor. The head coach monitors each cheerleader's grades throughout the semester and will intervene when necessary. Cheerleaders are required to complete 3 study hours per week in the tutoring lab and are expected to maintain a 2.5 GPA and pass a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester. Student-athletes will receive assistance with scheduling difficulties and are excused from class during required athletic events.
